Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)

What is Xarelto?

Xarelto is an anticoagulant, or blood thinner which is produced by Bayer and marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  Anticoagulants reduce blood clotting and can be used to prevent deep vein thrombosis, myocardial infarctions, pulmonary embolism, and some types of strokes.  It is commonly used after knee or hip surgeries or by patients with atrial fibrillation to decrease the risk of stroke.

Xarelto is one of the newer blood thinners on the market.  Previous anticoagulants such as Warfarin, commonly marketed as Coumadin, had precise dosing requirements and required monthly blood tests.  Xarelto was marketed as a safer, easier alternative.  It did not require close monitoring, the dosage was normalized and the risk a bleeding was lower.

What are the problems with Xarleto?

Unfortunately, Xarelto may cause irreversible internal bleeding.  Unlike Warfarin where an injection of Vitamin K can help reverse the effects, Bayer has yet to release information that would allow doctors stop uncontrolled bleeding.  This puts patients at an increased risk for hospitalization or even death from the use of Xarelto.

Other possible side effects include:

  • Abnormal Liver Function
  • Gastrointestinal Bleeding
  • Brain Hemorrhages
  • Internal Bleeding
  • Reduced Platelet Levels

The possibility for uncontrolled bleeding can be made worse due interactions with other drugs you may be taking.  Xarelto’s website lists the following drugs that can have an adverse effect when combined with usage:

  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
  • Itraconazole (Onmel™, Sporanox®)
  • Ritonavir (Norvir®)
  • Lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra®)
  • Indinavir (Crixivan®)
  • Carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Equetro®, Tegretol®, Tegretol®-XR, Teril™, Epitol®)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin-125®, Dilantin®)
  • Phenobarbital (Solfoton™)
  • Rifampin (Rifater®, Rifamate®, Rimactane®, Rifadin®)
  • John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)

How can United Law help?

If you or a loved one has been adversely affected by Xarelto, United Law is here to help.  Lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson and Bayer accusing them of failing to warn of the dangers of Xarelto as well as misrepresenting the benefits of the drug.  Even as the lawsuits move forward, Xarelto continues to be marketed and sold.
